Maui fire focus of community meeting

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters are still battling the fire at the Kula Forest Reserve in upper Kula, Maui.

At least 600 acres have burned.

Crews are using helicopters, and bulldozers to maintain a considerable distance between the fire and buffer zones, according to county officials. They report little threat to homes or other structures.

A public meeting was scheduled Sunday night at the Kula Community Center. Representatives from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Forestry Division were expected to provide an update on the situation and answer questions.

The firefighting has been hampered by the difficult terrain, dense forest and changing winds. Helicopters continue to amke water drops, bulldozers are installing firebreaks and ground fire crews are fighting back and contain the fire.

The Waipoli access road into Polipoli Park remains closed to the public. Motorists are advised to stay away from the area.

As winds shift, smoke and ash are drifting to upcountry areas. People concerned about respiratory conditions should consult with their physician and/or make preparations to move to areas not affected by the smoke.

Maui County Civil Defense will continue to monitor the situation. Residents are asked to listen to local radio and TV stations for updates.
