Oregon State baseball team beats UH-Hilo, 10-2

Lonnie Lechelt had three hits and Darwin Barney added two hits and two RBIs as Oregon State defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 10-2, Saturday in a collegiate baseball game at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

Mike Lissman hit a solo homer and Anton Maxwell allowed four hits in five innings while striking out five for the defending national champion Beavers (4-0).

Michael Higa hit an RBI single for the Vulcans (0-4).


SOFTBALL

MARYKNOLL WINS BERTH

Kimi Okaneku had two hits and two RBIs as Maryknoll defeated Mid-Pacific, 5-1, Friday to clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second berth in the Division II state tournament.

HIRE-BURDETT HAD HITS

St. Francis left fielder Jo'van Hire-Burdett went 2 for 5 with a first-inning double and a bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning that advanced the eventual winning run to second base in Friday's 4-3 victory over 'Iolani for the ILH Division I title.

Another player was credited with the hits in Saturday's story.

DIVING



FRICK SETS SECOND MARK

University of Hawai'i sophomore Magnus Frick set his second school record in as many days Saturday, winning the 1-meter springboard event with a score of 397.95 in the Rainbow Diving Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Frick set the UH record in the 3-meter springboard event on Friday, winning with 412.25.


TENNIS

TOP SEED IN FINAL

Top-seeded Edina Gallovits of Romania defeated Maria Jose Argeri of Argentina, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, Saturday in the semifinals of the $50,000 USTA Waikoloa Challenger at the Waikoloa Village Tennis Club on the Big Island.

Gallovits will play Hungary's Melinda Czink, who beat Germany's Angelika Bachmann, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Sunday's men's final will pit Great Britain's Jamie Baker against the United States' Michael Russell. Baker beat the Wayne Odesnik of the U.S., 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Russell ousted Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-0, 7-6 (2), in the semifinals.

South Africa's Natalie Grandin and the United States' Raquel Kops-Jones won the women's doubles title with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Latvia's Liga Dekmeijere and Julie Ditty of the U.S.


TRACK AND FIELD

UH'S MURRAY SECOND

Led by a second-place finish by weight-tosser Novelle Murray, the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team set 17 personal bests Saturday in the season-opening Washington Invitational at Seattle.

Murray, a senior from British Columbia, tossed the weight 58 feet, 6 inches. Cal State Northridge's Raquel Sola won with 59-4 1/4.

Also of note, UH sophomore Thalia Amanakis set two personal bests — 9.18 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and 58.36 seconds in the 400 — senior Chantelle Laan clocked 10:12.38 in the 3,000 to finish second in her section and knock three seconds off her previous best, and Annett Wichmann won the pentathlon on Friday.

HONOLULU MARATHON



REGISTER EARLY FOR $20

A total of 3,261 signed up for the Honolulu Marathon as of Saturday at Niketown in Waikiki, surpassing last year's early-registration total of 3,070 with one day remaining.

The marathon is Dec. 9.

Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Entry fee will be $20 — a fraction of the normal cost — for all Hawai'i residents and military persons stationed in the state.
