Punahou moves into first in ILH

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The magic number for the Punahou boys basketball team Saturday night against Kamehameha was 1-3-1.

The host Buffanblu used a 1-3-1 half-court trap to force 14 first-half turnovers, and Miah Ostrowski scored 20 points in a 61-52 victory.

Punahou moved into first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at 7-1 — one-half game ahead of 'Iolani (6-1). Kamehameha dropped to 3-5.

The Buffanblu started the game with a 14-2 run, and the lead reached 27-12 with 3:03 left before halftime. Kamehameha committed six turnovers in the first period and eight in the second.

"That's kind of our mission. We wanted to get after them," Punahou coach Dan Hale said.

The Buffanblu contested virtually every pass early, and the Warriors appeared sluggish after a heart-breaking 42-41 loss to 'Iolani on Friday night.

"Give them credit for their game plan," Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "I didn't prepare them for the 1-3-1, but good job on their part."

The Buffanblu's largest lead was 43-26 with 1:23 remaining in the third, but the Warriors got within 54-48 with 52 seconds remaining after a 3-pointer by Kawika Lyons.

Punahou made 5 of 6 free-throw attempts in the final 50 seconds to put it out of reach.

Kamehameha committed only two turnovers in the second half and hit five 3-pointers in the fourth period.

"Once we settled into it, it was a little bit of a hole to dig out of," Nakanishi said. "We'll be all right."

Punahou senior center Spencer McLachlin added: "They kind of figured out our defense and we weren't getting stops. Their shots were bound to fall sooner or later, and they did."

Ostrowski, a senior guard, scored nine points in both the second and fourth periods.

"Miah is good at getting the ball and taking it to the basket, and being aggressive," Hale said.

McLachlin scored 14 points and Kameron Steinhoff added 12 for Punahou, which shot 24 of 49 from the field.

Kamehameha finished 9 of 29 from 3-point range, including three apiece from Andrew Godinet and Rykin Enos.

Enos scored 14 points and Godinet added 13. The Warriors were 17 of 51 from the field, and 9 of 20 from the free-throw line.

"They're a tough team and they could have hung their heads after last night," Hale said. "We were fortunate to get some stops and had some fresher legs, and that helped."
