60-mph winds close Haleakala's summit building

Advertiser Staff

MAUI — Winds gusting at up to 60 mph atop Haleakala have forced National Park officials to close the summit building at the 10,000-foot level.

The visitor center at the crater remains open.

Despite the rough weather and a wind-chill temperature of 24 degrees, visitors keep streaming up to the dormant volcano, said Haleakala National Park spokesman Dominic Cardea.

Meanwhile, Maui Electric Co. is reporting scattered outages around the island from fallen utility poles and downed tree branches hitting power lines.
