Artistic literacy gets boost in Isles with partnership

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Theatre for Youth and the state Department of Education together make up one of 14 teams of arts organizations and school systems across the nation selected by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to participate in the Partners in Education Institute set for May 9-12.

The institute promotes partnerships in communities nationwide, linking arts organizations and local schools and focusing on the development of education programs for teachers. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Committee for the Performing Arts, the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund and the Bank of America Foundation.

More than 90 teams representing 42 states and the District of Columbia are participating in the Partners in Education program, now in its 16th year.

"The Kennedy Center, HTY and the DOE are natural partners for delivering professional development in arts education to teachers and teaching artists," said Louise King Lanzilotti, managing director at Honolulu Theatre for Youth.

In a prepared statement, Darrel M. Ayers, vice president of education at the Kennedy Center, said: "The arts must be at the heart of every student's learning experience." He added, "The education of teachers is an essential component of any effort designed to affect the artistic literacy of America's young people. The Kennedy Center Partners in Education program lends opportunities to reach this goal."
