Downed trees blamed for power outages

High winds are contributing to power outages today, affecting some 7,700 customers so far in parts of O'ahu, including Windward, Barbers Point, Nu'uanu and Wilson Tunnel.

While Hawaiian Electric has restored service to 4,200 customers, an estimated 3,500 customers in Kailua and Kane'ohe are without electricity, said HECO spokesman Peter Rosegg.

Parts of Kailua have been without electricity since about 8:30 this morning and crews are in the area, said Janet Crawford, spokeswoman for Hawaiian Electric. Some Kailua customers have had their power restored.

"The whole island is being implicated, so the crews are just going every which way," Crawford said.

Nu'uanu, Pali State Park and the Wilson Tunnel lost power at about 11:30 a.m. and some 1,940 customers are affected, she said.

Crews have also restored power at Barbers Point, Hale'iwa, Waialua and Wahiawa. Hale'iwa and Waialua lost power twice today, Crawford said.

"Most of the (outages) I've seen so far are from trees hitting lines," she said.

Crews must find the problem before they can initiate any repairs or reroute power, Crawford said.
