'Bigger, better' Honolulu bash planned
Advertiser Staff
The folks who planned last year's Honolulu centennial bash at Magic Island are back, planning a "bigger, better" celebration this year but will wait until tomorrow to give details of what to expect.Members of Honolulu 100, a nonprofit group that oversaw the city's centennial celebration last year, will join Mayor Mufi Hannemann tomorrow in revealing more about the 2007 Honolulu Family Festival.
The group said money raised from this year's festival will help pay for Ala Moana Park improvement projects. Joining the mayor will be Honolulu 100 Chairwoman Linda Wong and Family Festival co-chairs Fran Kirk and Wayne Panoke, along with Scott Fernandez, president of E.K. Fernandez Shows.
Last year's event weathered some difficulties. The city began clearing the park of homeless people at night shortly before the festival, prompting complaints from the homeless and their advocates that they didn't have enough warning. And some of the festival was canceled because of heavy rains.
