ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Low' in energy, high in cost

Advertiser Staff and News Services

New research shows that people are using more energy to power an array of appliances, lighting, electronics and miscellaneous equipment in their homes. These "smaller" energy-users can account for 46 percent to as much as 88 percent of the electricity use in a house that is otherwise energy-efficient. To conserve energy, consider ways to reign in use of big-screen TVs and computer connections to intercoms and more. HOMESTYLE TIP

INVEST IN VANITY LIGHTING

Because the bath is where many people conduct their grooming, proper lighting is essential. Experts recommend starting with vanity lighting because it does the most work — offering lighting for putting on makeup, shaving, styling your hair, etc.

Consider layers of light, which reduces glare. Use frosted bulbs instead of clear ones to further reduce glare.
