Temple invites bean-throwers to Saturday festival

Advertiser Staff

Shinnyo En Hawaii will be hosting a bean-throwing festival 10 a.m. Saturday at the McCully-area temple.

Setsubun, or Bean Throwing, is held on the first day of spring on the lunar calendar. Roasted soy beans are thrown at a home with shouts of: "Oni wa soto!" (Get out demons!) and "Fuku wa uchi!" (Come in happiness!). Rituals are also held at temples and shrines.

For additional information, call the temple, 2348 S. Beretania St., at 947-2814 or go to myoshioka@pmcihawaii.com.
