DUI arrests for year soar 52 percent on Big Island

Big Island police have made 100 drunk driving arrests this year compared with 66 over the same span last year, a 52 percent increase in DUI arrests.

Thirty-one of those DUI arrests were made from Jan. 23, through Jan. 29. Six of the drivers arrested last week were involved in traffic crashes. Five of the drivers were under the age of 21.

Big Island police also said there have been 172 major accidents so far this year compared with 198 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent.

So far, there have been four traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with two during the same period last year.
