Thousands across O'ahu still without electricity

By Mike Gordon

From Waialua to Waimanalo, wild winds continue to wreak havoc on O'ahu's electrical system with thousands of people still without power Wednesday afternoon, a Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman said.

About 1,500 customers in and around Waialua and Hale'iwa lost power at 12:55 p.m., said Sharon Higa, a HECO spokeswoman.

Another 2,000 customers in Wahiawa lost power just before noon, she said.

And in Waimanalo, 300 customers are still without power as HECO crews work to repair a utility pole near the Waimanalo Polo Field. They lost power when a tree fell on the pole about 6 a.m.

Since midnight, 22,000 customers have experienced power outages that were restored, Higa said. The 3,800 customers currently without power are not part of that tally, but will be added when their power is restored, she said.
