Hockey: Briere signs 8-year $52M deal with Flyers

By John Wawrow

Leave it to the little forward, Daniel Briere, to sign the biggest deal on the first day of NHL free agency today.

Briere signed an eight-year, $52 million contract, immediately becoming the fresh face of the retooled Philadelphia Flyers. The deal came two days after the former Sabres co-captain broke off negotiations with Buffalo, turning down the team's five-year, $25 million offer.

"Danny had many offers and lots of interest out there," Briere's agent, Pat Brisson, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "He is thrilled with the results."
