Fireworks permits still available on Kauai

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Officials with the Kaua'i Fire Department are reminding residents that they need to get a permit from the Fire Department if they plan to set off fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Firecrackers may be ignited only from 1 to 9 p.m. on July 4.

Applications are available at Fire Department headquarters at the Lihu'e Civic Center, Mo'ikeha Building, Suite 295. The office is open weekdays, 8 am to 4 p.m.

Permits are $25 each and may be used to purchase up to 5,000 non-aerial firecrackers. There is no limit on the number of permits an individual can buy. Applicants must be over 18 to obtain a permit.

A permit is not needed to purchase snakes, sparklers, fountains, whistles, toy "some bombs,", wheels and ground spinners or other similar products. Fire Capt. David Bukoski, of the Kaua'i Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau, is urging everyone to be careful when using fireworks.

"We are going through a very dry period right now so it's particularly important that fireworks are handled safely," Bukoski said. "People should follow the instructions that come with fireworks and adults should supervise youngsters at all times."

For more information, call the Fire prevention Bureau at 241-6511.
