Ex-49ers Sapolu, Wright in celebrity cook-off

Advertiser Staff

Former Honolulu resident Jesse Sapolu and Eric Wright, members of four San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl teams, will team up and cook against Visionary Related Entertainment's John Aeto and Frank B. Shaner (KUMU 94.7) at the Flavors of Honolulu today at 1 p.m.

The competition will be held at Mauna Loa Cooking Pavilion.

Both teams will receive a mystery basket of ingredients and have access to a fully-stocked pantry. They have 30 minutes to cook, and judges will declare the champion. Event emcee is City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle.

Sapolu played football at Farrington High School and the University of Hawaii before heading to the NFL, where he overcame early injury problems for a long and successful career with the 49ers. Drafted in 1983, Sapolu played his entire career with the 49ers and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1993 and 1994. He played guard and center, snapping for such greats as Joe Montna and Steve Young. Retiring in 1997, Sapolu remains in California and is currently the owner of the Point After Sports Bar in Los Angeles, and is the Vice President of Security Protection Services. He remains active in community as well as with the San Francisco 49ers Alumni.

Wright was a defensive back from the University of Missouri.
