Job coach sentenced for abusing incompetent person

Advertiser Staff

A 62-year-old man convicted of endangering the welfare of an incompetent person was sentenced today to 120 days in jail by Family Court Judge Patrick Border.

In addition to jail time, John Billam-Walker was fined $2,000 and ordered to get a mental health assessment and seek counseling if recommended.

A jury found Billam-Walker guilty Friday of psychologically and physically abusing a 34-year-old janitor while he performed job coaching and community-based services for developmentally and mentally disabled adults.

The abuse included yelling and pushing while the victim performed his job. Billam-Walker also slapped the victim, who was with friends at a community dance.
