Stocks end up on start of third quarter

Wall Street began the third quarter with a surge Monday, boosting the Dow Jones industrial average more than 120 points. The Institute for Supply Management's June manufacturing index came in better than expected, and the 10-year Treasury note's yield fell below 5 percent from 5.03 percent late Friday. Offers for Canadian telecommunications company BCE Inc., rural wireless provider Dobson Communications Corp. and British telecommunications company Virgin Media Inc. also buoyed stocks.

  • The Dow gained 126.81, or 0.95 percent, to 13,535.43.

  • The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 16.08, or 1.07 percent, to 1,519.43.

  • The Nasdaq composite index advanced 29.07, or 1.12 percent, to 2,632.30.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 1,072.28, or 8.60 percent.

  • The S&P is up 101.13, or 7.13 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 217.01, or 8.98 percent.
