UH softball coaches earn regional honor

University of Hawai`i head softball coach Bob Coolen, along with assistants John Nakamura and Dee Wisneski, were named West Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association today.

The Rainbow Wahine (50-13) won the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, where it fell to eventual NCAA runner-up Tennessee. Hawai'i won 50 games for the second time in school history and finished the year ranked No. 12 in the NFCA/USA Today poll.

The Rainbow Wahine coaching staff will be honored at the NFCA National Convention in November in Las Vegas.

The Arizona coaching staff was named Pacific Region and Division I Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to their second straight national title.

Other regional winners were Ohio State (Great Lakes), Hofstra and Long Island (Mid-Atlantic), DePaul (Mideast), Baylor (Midwest), Virginia Tech (Northeast), Tennessee (South) and Florida (Southeast).
