Autopsy scheduled for body found at Haleakala

WAILUKU, Maui — An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday on a man whose body was recovered Friday on a rock outcropping 500 below Haleakala National Park's Leleiwi overlook.

Park officials believe the man is a 46-year-old New Yorker, but due to the condition of the body, dental records will be necessary to confirm his identity, said pathologist Dr. Anthony Manoukian.

The man's body was first spotted Wednesday after his rental car was towed from the park and the rental car company reported him missing. No one saw the man fall, and the circumstances leading to his death are unknown, said park spokesman Dominic Cardea.

Bad weather and unstable terrain hampered initial recovery efforts, and a Maui Fire Department crew on Friday rappelled down to the steep cliff to secure the body and load it onto a helicopter.
