Mandie and Wayne Brady split, she files for divorce

Advertiser Staff

Hollywood gossip Web site TMZ.com is reporting that comedian/television personality Wayne Brady is being served with divorce papers by his wife, former Hawai'i resident Mandie Taketa Brady.

The Web site published copies of court papers filed by Taketa in Los Angeles Superior Court today seeking a divorce from Brady. Taketa's filing cited irreconcilable differerences as reason for the divorce.

Taketa also requested joint custody of the couple's four-year-old daughter Maile Masako Brady in the filing.

The divorce papers indicated that the couple had been separated since April 5, 2006, which was also the date of their seventh wedding anniversary.

Brady, who traveled to O'ahu regularly with Taketa to visit her family, was last here for performances in December at the Sheraton Waikiki's Hawai'i Ballroom.

In a 2000 interview, Brady told The Advertiser that he and dancer/actor Taketa had met in 1995, when both were employed in an ill-fated musical review called "Blast From the Past," which ran for several months at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

"I was part of the L.A. cast that was brought in, and she was one of the local dancers," said Brady. "We really didn't talk much in the first month and a half of working together, but we finally became friends. We decided to move to L.A. together as roommates, and we just fell in love."

Taketa, a Castle High School graduate, is the daughter of Hawai'i Carpenters Union head Ronald Taketa.

Brady is perhaps best known for television stints hosting his now-cancelled Emmy award-winning daytime talk show "The Wayne Brady Show," and as a cast member of the improvisational comedy series "Whose Line is it Anyway?"

Brady won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety, Musical or Comedy Series in 2003 for his work on "Whose Line."

A call to Brady's rep by TMZ.com was not immediately returned.
