Hawai'i residents are advised to not eat and discard two snack food products because of the possible contamination with salmonella, a bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness.

Robert's American Gourmet brand is recalling all codes, package sizes and expiration dates of Veggie Booty and Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks.

There have been 54 reports of the illness, occurring in children 10 years and younger, in 17 states. Because children often consume the product, parents should watch their children and seek medical care if they observe signs of the illness.

As of this morning, the state Department of Health has not received any reports of the illness.

Salmonella usually causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms will begin within one day to four days after exposure to bacteria. Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections to persons with poor underlying health.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating the cause of contamination with Robert's American Gourmet.
