Kona diving accident victim dies at Queen's

A 56-year-old Big Island man injured in a diving accident Sunday at Kainaliu Beach in Kona died yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office today identified the man as Gary P. Pooler of Kealakekua. An autopy listed cause of death as "asphyxia due to near drowning due to cranial cerebral injury from diving accident."

Pooler was pronounced dead at 1:40 p.m. yesterday.

Pooler was injured in a dive from a cliff about 25 feet high into shallow water, according to Honolulu police and Big Island fire reports.

The accident occurred at 10:43 a.m. Sunday. Pooler was transported by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital and was later medevaced to Queen's.
