A 53-year-old man was critically injured today when the motor scooter he was operating rear-ended a car on Kamehameha Highway near the intersection of Pa'ala'a Uka-Pupukea Road in Helemano.

The collision was reported at 4:45 p.m. and forced the closure of Kamehameha Highway in both directions for over an hour. The highway was reopened at about 6:15 p.m.

According to police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Michael Brede, the 1992 Honda scooter operator was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured.

That accident was reported at 1:35 p.m.

A man, 51, and woman, 47, were taken Queen's in serious condition and a man, 27, was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital for minor injuries, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
