Parking in short supply at Hilo's Aupuni Center

Advertiser Staff

For three weeks, beginning July 11, parking at Aupuni Center in Hilo will be very limited due to ongoing parking lot work. The street entrances and parking area along Pauahi Street will be closed for construction.

Parking for county employees and the public will be moved to stalls facing Kilauea Avenue. Vehicular entrance into Aupuni Center will be from Kilauea Avenue only.

For access to Motor Vehicle Registration, Human Resources and the Aupuni Center meeting room, Workers Compensation, Safety Office, and Treasury, employees and visitors may use the sidewalk along Pauahi Street to walk around the area under construction.

For access to Disabled Parking Placards, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Public Works, and Real Property, employees and visitors may use the new paved drive-through lane located on the south side (new Judiciary Building) of Aupuni Center.

"Normally," says Bruce McClure, County Public Works director, "there are 48 public parking stalls at Aupuni Center. While work is taking place, the public should expect at least 24 stalls at any given time."

In an effort to further limit traffic into the parking lot during this portion of the renovation, the county is asking the public to mail in their motor vehicle registrations and/or real property taxes. Those addresses are listed on real property tax bills and motor vehicle registration forms.
