Maui wildfires have been contained

Advertiser Staff

Maui fire officials today declared the brushfire at Olowalu under control at 1:50 p.m. while the Lahaina fire, which started yesterday, is 90 percent contained.

Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said firefighters have completed mop-up operations at Olowalu. The fire started eight days ago and burned an estimated 2,600 acres. It forced the evacuation of residents in the Olowalu Village and a subdivision in Launiupoko. No injuries were reported. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Lahaina fire has burned an estimated 180 acres. Fire personnel are at the scene to monitor hot spots, Martin said.
