Maui harbor to get new septic tanks

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $700,000 to build sewage system improvements at Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor on Maui.

A news release from the governor's office said the existing sewage system relies on obsolete large-capacity cesspools.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in concert with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, has set deadlines for eliminating these cesspools.

The new systems in Ma'alaea will involve environmentally sound septic tanks and an improved disposal structure, the release said. The harbor's location on the water makes it a priority in overall state upgrading efforts.

The improvements include treplacement of the restrooms at the harbor. Construction is scheduled to begin in September.
