Kim, Kaneko share 11th at Rolex golf

Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim and Ayaka Kaneko each shot 3-over-par 74 yesterday and were tied for 11th after the first round of the Rolex Tournament of Champions at Columbus, Ohio.

Kim, a former Big Island resident who now lives most of the year in Arizona, had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in her 38-36 round at the 6,188-yard Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course.

Kaneko, a Sacred Hearts Academy student, had three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in her 39-35 round.

Kristen Park, of Buena Park, Calif., leads the girls division of the American Junior Golf Association's flagship tournament after opening with a 3-under 68. She had four birdies and one bogey.


BASEBALL

WEST O'AHU WINS

Josh Queja had three hits and an RBI and Ronel Trias doubled, tripled and scored three runs as West O'ahu defeated Nevada, 10-3, yesterday to capture the United States Amateur Baseball Federation 4th of July Classic (ages 18-under) in San Diego.

Chad Takabuki and Steven Danaway each added two hits for West O'ahu, which advances to the World Series next month in San Diego.

Earlier yesterday, West O'ahu beat San Diego, 7-5, in the semifinals. Trias, Danaway and Tyler Nitahara each had two RBIs. Trias scored three runs.


BASKETBALL

SMITH TO JOIN AUSTRALIA

Tanya Smith, who will be a senior at the University of Hawai'i in the fall, will represent her home country of Australia at the 2007 World University Summer Games.

The native of Sydney was one of 12 players selected by Basketball Australia and Australian University Sport to compete at the Games, Aug. 8 to 18, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Smith, a 6-foot-3 forward, is coming off an all-Western Athletic Conference season. She led the Rainbow Wahine in scoring (14.4 average) and rebounding (10.4 average) in conference games.
