Associated Press
CHICAGO U.S. national team captain Kristine Lilly will be honored in front of her home-state crowd before the United States plays Norway in East Hartford, Conn., on July 14 in a Women's World Cup warmup.Lilly, who grew up in Wilton, has played in 327 international matches, more than any player. She'll turn 36 before heading to her fifth World Cup. Lilly's 123 career goals are second among women to former U.S. teammate Mia Hamm.
"It's great for us to come back to Hartford, especially after our game against China before the 2004 Olympics was such a great send-off," Lilly said. "The stadium has a wonderful atmosphere, and the fans in Connecticut have always been great. I'm glad the people of Connecticut can be a part of our send-off series."
Lilly's first appearance for the U.S. in the Nutmeg State came nearly 16 years ago in a 1-0 loss to Norway in New Britain. She also faced China in a tuneup for the 2004 Olympics, where she won a gold medal.
Abby Wambach, who has 74 career goals in 92 games, will join Lilly, Lindsay Tarpley and Natasha Kai, who played at Kahuku High School and the University of Hawai'i, among the forwards for the week of practice before the game, one of the series of exhibitions used as a tuneup for the World Cup from Sept. 10-30 in China.
Defenders Kate Markgraf, Christie Rampone and Cat Whitehill, who have five World Cup tournaments between them, will be joined by Stephanie Lopez, Tina Ellertson and Marian Dalmy.
Shannon Boxx, who missed most of 2006 due to hip and knee injuries, will be back in the midfield, along with Carli Lloyd, Lori Chalupny, Leslie Osborne, Angela Hucles and Marci Jobson.
Briana Scurry and Hope Solo are the goalkeepers.
"I love playing Norway," said Lilly, who has faced the Norwegians 30 times. "First, they are a great competitive team and one of our biggest rivals. Second, they are going to be in the World Cup which gives us another preparation game against a World Cup-caliber team, and third, I think it will be great soccer for the Connecticut area to see."
The United States will also face Japan, New Zealand and Finland before leaving for China, where they are placed in a group with Nigeria, North Korea and Sweden
