Shinto midsummer ceremony set for Saturday

The Chinowa Kuguri, the Shinto midsummer ceremony using a large ring of reeds, will get a Hawai'i touch when it is performed this weekendat the Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha - Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine.Ti leaves will be used to create the Chinowa ring, since ti is of cultural and historical significance here.
Visitors will be welcomed at the ceremony from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the shrine, and there will be traditional Japanese summer games and a make-and-take Tanabata Star Festival Sasa (bamboo decoration).
Park at Damien Memorial High School to catch the free shuttle.
