Shinto midsummer ceremony set for Saturday

The Chinowa Kuguri, the Shinto midsummer ceremony using a large ring of reeds, will get a Hawai'i touch when it is performed this weekendat the Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha - Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine.

Ti leaves will be used to create the Chinowa ring, since ti is of cultural and historical significance here.

Visitors will be welcomed at the ceremony from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the shrine, and there will be traditional Japanese summer games and a make-and-take Tanabata Star Festival Sasa (bamboo decoration).

Park at Damien Memorial High School to catch the free shuttle.
