A brushfire on Kaua'i that was burning on both sides of Kuhio Highway is under control and the roadway was completely opened to traffic as of 6:35 p.m.

The fire had forced the Kuhio Highway closure between South Leho Drive and Kapule Highway at 3:45 p.m.

The fire was reported under control at 6 p.m., said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.

Twenty-five firefighters from the Kalaheo, Kapa'a, and Lihu'e fire stations and the department's helicopter along with state Aircraft Rescue firefighters were involved in the firefight.

Fire officials estimate that 50 acres burned on the makai side of Kuhio Highway and 30 acres on the mauka side, Daubert said.

No lives or structures were threatened by the fire, although employees of Kaua'i Fruit & Flower Co. were evacuated as a precautionary measure, according to Daubert.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
