Eddie Kamae wins NEA honor

Advertiser Staff

Eddie Kamae received a 2007 National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowships, the country's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. He's one of 12 winners of the fellowship, which includes a one-time award of $20,000. Honorees from nine states were given the award at an awards ceremony and concert in Washington, D.C. on June 29, part of the NEA's 25th anniversary of the program.

Kamae, a Hawaiian musician, composer, and filmmaker from Honolulu, was raised in Honolulu and Lahaina. His grandmother was a court dancer during the reign of King Kalakaua. He founded The Sons of Hawai'i and later took up filmmaking.
