Monitor urban Honolulu traffic on new Web site

Advertiser Staff

The city has unveiled a new Web site listing construction projects in urban Honolulu that affect the flow of traffic.

The site, driveakamai.org, will be updated daily and plans are to expand it to include state construction work as well as private utility projects that affect traffic, Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in an afternoon press conference.

State officials and utility companies have yet to sign on to the project, according to Melvin Kaku, director of the city Department of Transportation Services.

The new program also features a telephone hotline that drivers can call to plan routes that bypass traffic tie-ups. That number is 768-3777.

Hannemann said the site will not include daily rush hour traffic advisories or notifications of roadway emergencies that cause traffic congestion.

The program was developed by city agencies as well as a private firm, Austin, Tsutsumi & Associates, which received a one-year, $400,000 contract for its work.
