PBS Hawaii's 'Island Insights' moves to Thursday nights

Advertiser Staff

The PBS Hawaii program "Island Insights" has a new time and more heft, starting at 7:30 tonight.

The show, previously seen on Mondays, has moved to a new time slot, Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

It emerges as an expanded hour-long, live, call-in program delving into timely matters of importance to the community.

The beefed-up "Island Insights," hosted by Dan Boylan, will be an unscripted, free-wheeling discussion show presenting officials and stakeholders on "hot-button" public issues, welcoming questions from viewers. Viewers may phone in, or email their questions to insights@pbshawaii.org.

"Our first re-vamped show will ask, 'What happened to re-inventing public education in Hawai'i?" said Leslie Wilcox, president and CEO of PBS Hawaii. "We'll follow up with programs on efforts on the part of private, public, and even charter schools to improve education in Hawai'i, the Hawaiian movement within Hawai'i's charter schools, we'll examine how effective home-schooling is, and and we'll be revisiting these pressing issues from time to time throughout the year."

Other shows will address developments in transportation issues, Hawaiian race-based programs, and quality of life in the Islands.

"I'm especially looking forward to a program we're planning for next month: How do we address the widening gap between 'haves' and 'have-nots' in Hawai'i?" Wilcox said. "This affects the quality of life in Hawaii, and it should be a vital concern for all of us."

PBS Hawaii is a nonprofit, locally owned and locally focused public television station broadcasting throughout the state of Hawaii.

"Na Mele: Traditions in Hawaiian Song, " another popular, long-running PBS Hawaii program, takes a new place in the line-up — it will air Mondays at 7:30 p.m.
