Lingle urges special session to fix flaws in bills

By Treena Shapiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Gov. Linda Lingle has sent a letter to the state Senate President and House Speaker asking them to call a special session on July 10 to fix technical flaws in bills, rather than override any vetoes she may issue that day.

Lingle has identified 33 bills that she could potentially veto and members of both chambers think they have the votes to override the majority of her vetoes.

In her letter, Lingle said that certain bills are pending veto because they are unconstitutional or have adverse fiscal implications, but she suggested that lawmakers can correct the errors.

Funding for a Creative Media Academy and MELE program, a pedestrian safety bill, a traffic control center on Maui and the purchase of agricultural lands in Kunia and 'Ewa are among those the governor indicated she would support if the Legislature made appropriate changes.
