City expands wireless Internet service

Advertiser Staff

Wireless Internet service is now available in more city parks but plans for free Wi-Fi in Chinatown have hit a snag, Mayor Mufi Hannemann said.

You can make your free wireless Internet connection now at 'Ewa Beach District Park, Kalakaua District Park, Nanakuli Beach Park and Ma'ili Beach Park.

But Earthlink, the company that was helping the city on its free Wi-Fi project in Chinatown has "scaled back" its commitment, the mayor said at an afternoon news conference.

City Information Technology director Gordon Bruce said he is pursuing "a number of promising alternatives" and promised to have the Chinatown Wi-Fi system up and running by the end of the summer.
