Traffic delays expected on Kamehameha at Waimea Bay

Advertiser Staff

There will be a series of road closures this month along Kamehameha Highway near Waimea Bay for hillside work aimed at preventing rockfalls following last April's rockslide.

The first closure is set for Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when traffic will be stopped intermittently for the transportation of equipment.

Lanes will be closed during 10-minute intervals while crews from the state Department of Transportation bring down additional loose rocks and materials from the steep hillside. Officials expect to finish the work on July 30.

A protective netting will be set up to contain the falling rocks while crews use drills to loosen those materials.

North Shore motorists should allow for extra travel time during work hours.
