NPR's Alan Cheuse gives writing workshop at UH

Advertiser Staff

Writer and NPR book commentator Alan Cheuse will give the free talk "Pacific Overtures: Images of Hawaii and the South Pacific in American Fiction" on Aug. 16, and the two-day writing workshop "Scene Making" Aug. 17 and 18 at the University of Hawai'i.

In the intensive workshop students will learn the art of writing effective scenes. The class will look in depth at the elements that make up the narrative rhythm of a scene, and how they all work together. There will be in-class exercises, revision and some reading of James Joyce and Anton Chekhov, among other writers.

Cheuse is the author of three novels, including "The Grandmothers' Club" and "The Light Possessed," three collections of short stories, a memoir ("Fall Out of Heaven"), and a collection of essays. As a book commentator, Cheuse is a regular contributor to National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." His short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and Ploughshares.
