The brushfire along Wa'ahila Ridge that grew this afternoon to envelope 50 acres in the St. Louis Heights area is now contained, officials said.

About 60 firefighters battled the blaze this afternoon. Crews will continue to monitor the scene, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.

At midday fire officials estimated that the fire was burning about 2 acres. And at one point last night, 5 acres.

Honolulu Emergency Services paramedics treated one firefighter for heat exhaustion at about 2:45 p.m. The 28-year-old firefighter was taken by colleagues to a nearby field, near the university dorms. He was later taken to Straub Medical Center in stable condition, suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration, EMS spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.

Firefighters declared the brushfire contained at 3:15 p.m.

Firefighters responded to the fire call at 10:33 p.m. last night. It appeared to have begun between Wa'ahila Ridge State Recreation Area and the water tank, with winds pushing it makai.

Seelig said initially 45 firefighters, a helicopter and tanker responded to the fire call.

Honolulu Fire Department firefighters first declared the smoldering blaze contained at about 2:15 a.m.

The brushfire rekindled, however, at midday.

No injuries were reported through the night and morning.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the brushfire.
