Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Police Department has made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened shortly before 5:26 a.m. today on Farrington Highway in Makaha .

The Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as Correna Medeiros, 39, of Wai'anae.

Medeiros was on a bicycle when she was hit by a Honda approximately 130 feet west of Lahilahi Place on Farrington, police said.

The Honda was traveling eastbound on Farrington when the vehicle veered off the roadway onto the soft-shoulder and struck the bicycle, police said. The bicyclist had no local address.

Medeiros was thrown from the bicycle and suffered severe head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

The driver of the Honda fled the scene, investigators said.

However, using a description of the vehicle provided by witnesses, police said they later found the car and arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of negligent homicide and failure to render aid. He is a resident of the Wai'anae area, police said.

The accident and subsequent on-scene investigation tied up traffic for several hours.
