Hamakua man, 84, killed in Hawaii Belt Road crash

Advertiser Staff

An 84-year-old Hamakua man died Saturday after a two-car crash on Hawai'i Belt Road, Big Island police said.

The victim was identified as William L. Ferreira.

The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. when Ferreira, who was driving a 1996 Honda sedan, attempted to make a U-turn and was hit by a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Ferreira was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m. at the North Hawai'i Community Hospital. The driver of the pickup truck, a 44-year-old Kamuela man, was not injured. Both drivers had seat belts on.

Police do not believe that speed or alcohol were involved. The crash is the 17th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 18 at the same time in 2006.
