ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
The fruit of the matter

Advertiser Staff

Nothing beats the heat like an icy, fresh-fruit smoothie. Looking for something beyond the Jamba Juice menu? A slew of homegrown businesses are master blenders. Diamond Head Cove Health Bar (Monsarrat Ave., 732-8744) mixes the Brazilian super fruit acai with soy milk, blueberries and locally grown bananas ($5.50). The Pacific Passion at Lanikai Juices is made with local liliko'i, pineapple, mango, banana, yogurt and honey; prices range from $4 to $5.75. On a budget? In Mo'ili'ili, Da Spot (908 Pumehana St., 941-1313) makes an addictive guava-haupia (along with a gazillion other flavors) giant cup of goodness for $2.75 to $3.75. Or head to Chinatown, where fresh-fruit smoothies start at $3. At Maunakea Marketplace Drinks (1120 Maunakea St., no phone), flavors include seasonal exotics such as dragon fruit and avocado.

POUCH PERFECT

Sig Zane isn't just about aloha dresses and shirts — the Big Island-based designer's Hilo Leather Collection combines his inimitable prints with quality cowhide to make pretty leather-trimmed purses. We like the Hilo One bag — a go-anywhere essentials-only rectangle to sling over the shoulder and get on with your day (or night). $185, available at www.sigzane.com.
