Grease fire chars Lahaina Cannery Mall sandwich shop

Advertiser Staff

LAHAINA, Maui — A grease fire last night at Ba-Le Sandwich in the Lahaina Cannery Mall reportedly caused $40,000 damage.

The fire started when a can of cooking oil was accidentally left on a hot stove, igniting flames that caused a grease fire in the exhaust duct system, Maui fire officials said.

The blaze was reported just after 10 p.m. by workers at the Compadres Bar and Grill in the mall. Two engines and a fire truck responded to alarm and had the flames out within an hour.
