Hawaii cashes in on top-tier food stamp program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded the state Department of Human Services a $567,407 bonus for excellence in administering federal food stamp program benefits in 2006.Hawai'i received one of seven bonuses awarded by USDA for having one of the best payment accuracy rates in the nation. South Dakota topped the list. Others receiving bonuses were the Virgin Islands, Missouri, Washington, Mississippi and North Carolina.
Hawai'i's error rate of 3.4 percent was well below the national target goal of 6.2 percent. Over 89,000 Hawai'i residents receive food stamps.
