SSFM International announced that Larry Smith has joined the firm as a senior manager for transportation related projects in Hawai'i and the Pacific region. Smith is the former supervisory highway engineer with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Smith brings management skills and an engineering background, having worked on projects in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Colorado and Wisconsin. He also administered the Federal Lands Highway Program portions of 23 USC, the National Transportation Legislation.
Longs Drug Stores Corporation announced that ROCK TANG has been named regional director of real estate for Hawai'i. He is responsible for all real estate transactions, market analysis and planning, site selection, purchase and lease negotiations for Longs Drug Stores in Hawai'i.
A Honolulu resident, he earned his bachelor's degree at UCLA and his Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School. He is a licensed real estate agent.
"We are very pleased that Rock will be leading our real estate efforts in Hawai'i," said Brian McAndrews, vice president of real estate for Longs Drugs.
KATHRYN INKINEN, president of Inkinen & Associates Inc., has been elected chair of the board of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Also elected was chair-elect Ronald Hayashi, president of HCCS Consulting Associates; vice chair-administration/secretary Wayne Kato, president of Painter's Warehouse Inc.; vice chair-finance/treasurer Leo Asuncion Jr., senior integrated resource planning analyst at Hawaiian Electric Co.; Scott Fujii, vice president at Bank of Hawaii; Scott Higa, president of Robert M. Kober/Hanssen/Mitchell Architects announced that Kelvin Chong has been named principal with the architecture, interior design and urban planning firm. Chong's quarter century of experience in Hawai'i includes work on renovations, tenant improvements and government projects.
Key projects include Nanaikapono Elementary School, Institute for Astronomy, Brigham Young Hawai'i in La'ie, Na Hale Haumana Phase 2 and Kalepa Village phases 3 and 4.
He is a University of Hawai'i-Manoa graduate and is an architect registered in the state of Hawai'i.
Dale Carstensen was named director of sales and leisure for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Hawai'i and French Polynesia. He most recently served as director of sales and marketing — Asia and Leisure for the Sheraton Hotels & Resorts in Waikiki.
He has held various positions with Sheraton, among them, director of sales for the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and Sheraton Moana Surfrider hotels; director of travel industry sales — domestic; account director — leisure sales; director of sales for the Sheraton Makaha Resort and Country Club; and account director for Princeville Resort. He has also worked at the Sheraton Kauai and Sheraton Coconut Beach hotels. He is a University of Hawai'i-Manoa graduate.

MARK MATSUMURA has joined New England Financial, the Pacific Rim Group as a managing associate. A University of Hawai'i graduate, he is a certified financial planner and a member of the Financial Planning Association and National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Earlier this year, Laird Christianson Advertising assembled a new senior team to lead the company's creative department. Executive creative director Dennis Christianson recruited his team from both inside and outside the agency. Members are: Melissa Alpan, Wendi Chun, Dennis Mahaffay and Brennan Simcock.
Chun has been with the firm since 1979. Her duties include the creative supervision of clients, which include Prince Resorts Hawaii, Na Hoku Jewelers and Hilo Hattie.
Mahaffay is a director by trade whose responsibilities include supervision of all broadcast and film production. He has won many national and local awards.
Simcock leads the teams for Marriott Hotels and Resorts and Centex Destination Properties. Most recently, he was creative director at Team Vision Honolulu and Starr Seigle Advertising.
Alpan began with the firm in 2003. She was previously senior art director with Milici Valenti Ng Pack. Ritz Carlton is one of her current clients.
