Pupukea restroom work nearly done

North Shore beachgoers are getting good news: The city is wrapping up renovation and repair of the Pupukea Beach Park restrooms at Sharks Cove this week.

The makeover includes repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures, painting, application of a sealant to make the facility easier to clean and minor repairs. Skylights will be installed by the end of this month to brighten the interior.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced in April that the city would expand its park renovation program to the North Shore.

"I'm happy we were able to make over one of our older facilities at one of our most popular beach parks on the North Shore," Hannemann said.

He said his Cabinet officials plan a community workday on Aug. 4 at Waimea Beach Park to clean up and perform minor repairs. Hannemann said the project is similar to one done last summer at Ma'ili Beach Park.

Soldiers from Schofield Barracks will help that day to clean up other parks along the coast, he said. "We invite community organizations to volunteer."

The Pupukea makeover is part of the city Department of Parks and Recreation's "just-in-time maintenance program," where maintenance crews perform intensive work on a park or facility. Similar projects have been done at Ala Moana Beach Park, Poka'i Bay Beach Park, Ma'ili Beach Park and Waimanalo Beach Park.

The next scheduled restroom makeover will begin today at Queen's Surf in Waikiki.
