Brazilian fencer accidentally stabbed in training

Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A Brazilian fencer was recovering from surgery after being accidentally stabbed by his brother — and teammate — in a practice session for the Pan American Games.

Ivan Schwantes needed surgery to drain blood and air from his lung after his brother's epee snapped near his right underarm during training yesterday, games officials said in a statement today. It was uncertain whether the 27-year-old Schwantes would recover in time for the fencing competition, which starts Saturday.

"The doctor said he still has chances," Brazil's delegation chief Marcus Vinicius Freire said.

Schwantes and his brother, Athos, were practicing at the Pan American village in Rio. They both compete in individual and team epee.
