Maui's Olowalu brushfire flares up, burns half-acre

Maui fire officials reported today that a flare-up occurred last night inside of a burn area of a fully contained brushfire that started on June 27 in Olowalu.No injuries or damages to structures were reported.
The flare-up burned an estimated half-acre inside of a gulch located within the 2,600 acre burn area. Firefighters received the flare-up report at 9:43 p.m. and had the blaze under control at 11 p.m.
As a precautionary measure, approximately 15 individuals in a small area of homes voluntarily evacuated. All returned safely to the homes in less than 30 minutes.
The 2,600-acre brushfire burned in Olowalu and Launiupoko June 27 to June 29. It closed the Honoapi'ilani Highway and destroyed two homes and a tomato farm.
The brushfire remains at 100 percent containment and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
