Small brushfire reported at Kula Forest Reserve

Advertiser Staff

KULA, Maui — County and state firefighters today were attempting to snuff out a small fire that ignited vegetation at the 7,000-foot elevation of the Kula Forest Reserve. No homes were in danger, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The blaze was reported around 3:15 p.m. It was in a 30-square-foot area spared by a fire earlier this year that consumed 2,300 acres of forest land.

The DLNR dispatched 11 wildland firefighters and two fire engines to the scene, with the Maui Fire Department dispatching a fire engine and its helicopter.

The earlier fire, which burned from Jan. 23 to Feb. 5, caused state Department of Land and Natural Resources to close the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli Springs State Park for five months. The area reopened just this month.
