Legislature overrides 11 of 27 vetoes

Advertiser Staff

The state Legislature this afternoon overrode 11 of the 27 vetoes issued by Gov. Linda Lingle this morning, including her veto of a bill that would provide $3 million over two years to improve pedestrian safety.

Lingle said earlier today that she would not release the pedestrian safety money even if her veto was overriden because it would come out of the state highway fund instead of the general fund.

AARP Hawai'i staged a rally outside the state Capitol today in favor of the pedestrian money, which was sought after several people were killed this year by motorists.

State lawmakers also overrode vetoes on bills that will fund a sustainability task force and provide immunity from prosecution for people who leave newborns with emergency workers within 72 hours after birth.

Lawmakers chose not to attempt an override of a bill that would have allowed people who have had their driver's licenses revoked for drunken driving to apply for new licenses after 10 years.

Lingle also announced today that she took four bills off her veto list.

One bill would allow workers to decide whether to use paid leave during family leave periods, while another would extend by a year a pilot health-benefit plan for public school teachers.

The third bill keeps more than half of the admission fees at Diamond Head state monument for use at the monument, rather than at other monuments or parks. The fourth bill relates to a community-based Waimano Ridge task force. Lingle said she would not release the money for the task force but wanted to recognize the community effort.

In all, Lingle vetoed 42 bills this year and 19 were overridden by the Legislature.

Here is the list of the 11 bills that the Legislature saved today from Lingle vetoes, along with the 16 bills that will not become law because lawmakers did not attempt veto overrides:
