14 children suffered fireworks-related injuries July 4th

Advertiser Staff

Seventeen people, 16 of them on O'ahu, were treated for July 4 fireworks-related injuries at Hawai'i emergency departments, according to tracking by the state Health Department's injury prevention and control program.

The total is the lowest since 2003, when an equal number of people were treated for fireworks-related injuries.

Fourteen of those treated in 2007 were under the age of 18 and six of those were younger than 10. The youngest person injured was 4 years old and the oldest 30.

Burns to hands and fingers were the common injury and most were treated between 8:15 and 9:15 p.m.

Fifteen of 16 people injured, who agreed to provide information on how they were injured, said they suffered burns while setting off or holding fireworks.

The lone Neighbor Island injury occurred on the Big Island.
