Sewer lines under Ala Wai now linked to pump station

Advertiser Staff

Two 1,100-foot sewer lines that run under the Ala Wai Canal were connected to the Beachwalk Pump Station in Waikiki.

The new lines, which were built inside tunnels, are already being used to move wastewater out of the area.

This was a key part of the Beachwalk Wastewater Emergency Bypass project.

Contractors are now working on building concrete walls in the makai pit.

They will also be installing a 42-inch ball valve to regulate the flow to a third sewer line, which connects to the exiting main line on Kai'olu Street.

The project was spurred by a main break in the aging sewer line under Kai'olu Street in March 2006. That forced the city to divert 48 million gallons of wastewater into the Ala Wai Canal.
